Operation Cottage completed the Allied effort to recapture the Aleutian Islands from Japanese occupation, a campaign that had begun following Japan's seizure of Kiska in June 1942. The landing on Kiska represented the final stage of that effort, yet the operation unfolded against an island the Japanese had already secretly evacuated two weeks prior. The unopposed landings meant no ground combat occurred, but Allied forces still sustained over 500 casualties from Japanese mines, booby traps, friendly fire incidents, and vehicle accidents. The operation underscored the risks of amphibious assaults even in the absence of an active defender, and the failure of Allied intelligence to detect the Japanese withdrawal in time shaped how the landings were planned and executed.
