Operation Chastise targeted German industrial infrastructure in the Ruhr by breaching the Möhne and Edersee dams, causing catastrophic flooding across the Ruhr and Eder valleys. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more damaged, along with factories and mines. Despite rapid German repair efforts, production did not return to normal until September 1943, imposing a multi-month disruption on a critical industrial region at a period of sustained Allied strategic bombing. The raid came at significant cost to 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, which lost eight aircraft and 53 aircrew killed. An estimated 1,600 civilians died in the flooding, approximately 600 Germans and 1,000 enslaved labourers, predominantly Soviet nationals. The operation demonstrated both the potential and the limits of precision strategic bombing: the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage, and German recovery proved faster than anticipated, but the temporary suppression of Ruhr output contributed to ongoing pressure on German war production.
