Battle context
Operation Barbarossa, launched on 22 June 1941, was the largest military offensive in human history, committing more than 3.8 million Axis troops along a 2,900-kilometer front into the western Soviet Union. The stated objective was the capture of territory extending to the Arkhangelsk–Astrakhan line. By the time the operation concluded on 5 December 1941, it had produced over 8 million casualties, with German forces sustaining approximately 1,000,000 and Soviet forces approximately 4,500,000. The scale of losses on both sides fundamentally altered the material and strategic balance of the war. Beyond the immediate campaign, Barbarossa opened the Eastern Front, which became the largest and deadliest land theater in history, and brought the Soviet Union into the Allied coalition against Nazi Germany. Its failure to achieve a rapid decisive victory committed Germany to a protracted two-front war, while Soviet entry into the Allied powers reshaped the strategic weight arrayed against the Axis for the remainder of World War II.
