Battle context

Operation Ashura was a two-day offensive launched on 24 October 2014 to retake Jurf Al Sakhar from Islamic State forces. The city's proximity to Baghdad made it strategically significant, and its recapture served a dual purpose: removing an IS position capable of threatening the capital and blocking a potential IS advance toward the Shia holy cities of Karbala and Najaf. The timing was directly tied to the Day of Ashura, when millions of Shia pilgrims converge on those cities, making an IS presence in Jurf Al Sakhar an acute security threat. The operation was conducted by Iraqi government forces and Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Units, with senior commanders including Hadi al-Amiri and Iranian general Qasem Soleimani present, reflecting the degree to which Iranian-aligned forces had become integral to Iraqi counter-IS operations by late 2014. Reported IS casualties of 498 indicated a significant engagement for a single localized operation within the broader effort to roll back IS territorial control around Baghdad.
