Significance

Operation Archery, also known as the Måløy Raid, was a British Combined Operations raid against German positions on the island of Vågsøy, Norway. The operation pitted approximately 570 British personnel against a German garrison of 100–150, resulting in around 120 German casualties. As one of several British commando raids along the Norwegian coast, it demonstrated Britain's capacity to strike occupied Europe at points of its choosing and imposed a defensive burden on German forces holding Norway. The raid occurred in the weeks following the United States' entry into the war, a period when Allied offensive options remained limited and such operations carried both material and psychological weight.
