Operation Albion was a combined German air, land, and naval operation aimed at occupying the West Estonian Archipelago — the Baltic islands of Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, and Muhu — from Russian control. The three islands held strategic value as dominant positions over the central and northern Baltic Sea, and their capture extended German control over that theater. With Russian forces suffering approximately 20,130 casualties against a defending force of roughly 24,000, the operation effectively neutralized Russian resistance in the archipelago. German forces secured Saaremaa by 16 October and prompted the Russian evacuation of Muhu by 20 October. The operation came during the broader collapse of Russian military cohesion in 1917 and demonstrated the reach of German combined-arms power in the Baltic littoral at a moment when Russian Imperial forces were disintegrating.
