Significance
The Noemvriana was an armed confrontation in Athens in December 1916 between the Kingdom of Greece and the Allied Powers, stemming from the dispute over Greek neutrality in World War I. The engagement pitted a Monarchist force of approximately 20,000 against an Allied landing party of around 2,500, resulting in 194 French casualties. The confrontation did not produce a recorded military result but escalated the internal division between the Monarchist government and Greek supporters of Allied intervention, a fracture known as the National Schism. The fighting was followed by reprisals and riots against pro-Allied Greeks in Athens, deepening the political crisis that had split Greece between the Venizelist camp aligned with the Entente and a palace-backed government committed to neutrality. The episode intensified Allied pressure on Greece and formed part of the broader sequence of coercive measures the Entente would employ to bring Greece into the war on their side.
