Significance

The naval operations on Lake Garda formed a secondary but operationally consequential theater of the Third Italian War of Independence. Over the course of roughly a month, Italian and Austrian flotillas contested control of the lake, with Austria holding a decisive material advantage: its fleet was larger, more modern, and better armed than the Italian force. Austrian dominance of the lake waters directly hindered Italian troop movements, constraining Italian operational freedom along that axis of the campaign.
