Naousa massacre

Significance

The destruction of Naoussa in April 1822 was among the episodes of mass violence that marked the Greek War of Independence in Macedonia. A Greek rebel force of around 4,000 faced an Ottoman army of roughly 19,000, a disparity that underscored the difficulty of sustaining the revolt in northern Greece beyond the initial outbreak in the Peloponnese. The event became known as a massacre, indicating the fate of the town and its population rather than a conventional military defeat, and it shaped the character of the wider Macedonian theater of the conflict.
