Significance

The destruction of Naoussa in April 1822 was among the episodes of mass violence that marked the Greek War of Independence in Macedonia. A Greek rebel force of around 4,000 faced an Ottoman army of roughly 19,000, a disparity that underscored the difficulty of sustaining the revolt in northern Greece beyond the initial outbreak in the Peloponnese.
