Battle context
The Moravia–Ostrava offensive, conducted from March 10 to May 6, 1945, resulted in the Soviet conquest of what is now eastern Czech Republic, one of the final large territorial acquisitions on the Eastern Front before Germany's capitulation. German casualties reached 250,000 against approximately 23,960 Soviet losses, a disparity reflecting the deteriorating capacity of German forces to mount sustained resistance in this late stage of the war. The offensive was prosecuted under Soviet commanders Ivan Petrov and Andrey Yeryomenko against a German command that included Ferdinand Schörner, Gotthard Heinrici, and Walther Nehring. Its conclusion in early May 1945 placed Soviet forces in control of the region days before the end of the war in Europe.
