The Montenegrin campaign of World War I, in January 1916, was a part of the Serbian campaign, in which Austria-Hungary defeated and occupied the Kingdom of Montenegro, an ally of the Kingdom of Serbia.

Significance

The Montenegrin campaign of January 1916 was a component of the broader Serbian campaign, in which Austria-Hungary defeated and occupied the Kingdom of Montenegro. Montenegro was an ally of Serbia, and its fall extended Austro-Hungarian control over the western Balkans, eliminating another Allied belligerent from the front and consolidating the Central Powers' hold on the region. The campaign concluded with the occupation of the kingdom, removing Montenegro as an active participant in the war.
