Battle context

The Makiivka strike on the night of 31 December 2022/1 January 2023 produced one of the highest single-incident Russian casualty counts publicly acknowledged during the full-scale war. Ukrainian officials claimed approximately 400 troops killed; Russian authorities initially confirmed 63 dead before raising the figure to 89. The divergence between the two figures became itself a point of contention, with the Russian acknowledgment being unusually candid by the standards of official wartime reporting. The destruction of a vocational school building used as a billet, along with nearby military equipment, focused attention on Russian force-concentration practices and the vulnerability of improvised troop quarters to precision strike systems.
