Battle context

The Liberation of Vranje marked one of the final stages of the second phase of the Serbian–Ottoman War of 1876–78, consolidating Serbian advances deep into what is today South Serbia. The battle followed directly from the Serbian breakthrough at Grdelica, which opened the Masurica Valley and left the road to Vranje undefended. Serbian forces under Belimarković, numbering roughly 8,500, engaged an Ottoman force of approximately 15,000, inflicting over 1,200 casualties on the larger defending army. The operation was coordinated with a broader pattern of local rebellions against Ottoman authority in the border regions, including uprisings in the Vranje district itself, giving the Serbian command both a military and a political imperative to act. The dispatch of Lieutenant Stepa Stepanović to organize a dedicated rebel battalion reflected Serbian efforts to integrate irregular resistance into conventional operations, extending the reach of the offensive while the main force exploited the opening created at Grdelica.
