The Kiev Arsenal January Uprising, sometimes simply called the January Uprising or the January Rebellion, was a Bolshevik-organized armed workers' revolt that started on 29 January [O.S. 16 January] 1918, at the Arsenal Factory in Kiev during the Ukrainian–Soviet War. The goal of the uprising was to sabotage the ongoing elections to the Ukrainian Constituent Assembly and to support the advancing Red Army. The forces of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) managed to quell the uprising by 4 February [O.S. 22 January] 1918.

Significance

The Kyiv Arsenal January Uprising was a Bolshevik-organized armed workers' revolt launched at the Arsenal Factory in Kyiv on 29 January 1918, during the Ukrainian–Soviet War. Its stated objectives were twofold: to sabotage the ongoing elections to the Ukrainian Constituent Assembly, thereby undermining the political legitimacy of the Ukrainian People's Republic, and to support the advancing Red Army from within the city. The uprising represented a coordinated internal pressure tactic timed to coincide with external Bolshevik military operations against the UPR. Forces of the Ukrainian People's Republic, fielding approximately 2,000 troops against a Bolshevik-aligned force of around 2,200, suppressed the revolt by 4 February 1918. The UPR's ability to quell the uprising preserved its hold on Kyiv in the short term, though the episode illustrated the dual threat the republic faced: conventional Red Army advances from without and organized Bolshevik agitation from within its own industrial workforce.
