Kerch–Eltigen Operation

Significance

The Kerch–Eltigen Operation was an amphibious offensive launched by the Red Army in November 1943 as a preparatory step toward the broader Crimean offensive. Soviet forces landed at two points on Crimea's eastern coast, aiming to dislodge German forces from the peninsula. The operation produced a mixed outcome: the northern beachhead at Yenikale was successfully reinforced and held, while an Axis counterattack eliminated the southern beachhead at Eltigen. The retained foothold at Yenikale proved consequential — it served as the staging point from which Soviet forces launched further offensive operations into Crimea in May 1944, making the partial success of the Kerch–Eltigen Operation a direct enabler of the eventual Crimean campaign.
