Kassa attack

Significance

The bombing of Kassa on 26 June 1941 served as the immediate political trigger for Hungary's entry into World War II on the side of the Axis. The following day, 27 June, the Hungarian government cited the attack as justification to declare war on the Soviet Union, drawing Hungary into the Eastern Front conflict. The identity of the aircraft that carried out the strike was never established, leaving the question of responsibility unresolved, yet the event produced concrete strategic consequences: Hungary's declaration extended the Axis coalition and expanded the front against the Soviet Union.
