Kassa attack

Overview

The bombing of Kassa took place on 26 June 1941, when still unidentified aircraft conducted an airstrike on the city of Kassa, then part of Hungary, today Košice in Slovakia. This attack became the pretext for the government of Hungary to declare war on the Soviet Union the next day, 27 June.

Significance

The bombing of Kassa on 26 June 1941 served as the immediate political trigger for Hungary's entry into World War II on the side of the Axis. The following day, 27 June, the Hungarian government cited the attack as justification to declare war on the Soviet Union, drawing Hungary into the Eastern Front conflict.
