Jintian Uprising

Significance

The Jintian Uprising marked the formal beginning of the Taiping Rebellion, the large-scale civil war that would convulse the Qing dynasty for over a decade. On 11 January 1851, Hong Xiuquan formally declared an armed revolt from the rebel base at Jintian in Guangxi, transforming the God Worshippers movement from a religious organization into an open military challenge to Qing authority. With a Taiping force of 20,000 against 7,000 Qing troops and Qing casualties recorded at 1,000, the uprising demonstrated that the movement could field a substantial fighting force capable of inflicting losses on imperial soldiers. As the founding act of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the Jintian Uprising set in motion a conflict that would ultimately threaten the Qing dynasty's hold on southern China and draw in successive Qing military campaigns over the following years.
