Gorlice–Tarnów Offensive

Battle context

The Gorlice–Tarnów offensive began as a limited operation intended to relieve Russian pressure on Austro-Hungarian forces on the Eastern Front, but rapidly expanded into the Central Powers' principal offensive effort of 1915. The operation produced a total collapse of Russian lines and forced a deep retreat into Russian territory. The sustained series of actions consumed the majority of the 1915 campaigning season, running from early May until bad weather halted operations in October. This shift from a local relief effort to a war-defining campaign fundamentally altered the strategic balance on the Eastern Front for that year, leaving Russian forces badly weakened and the Austro-Hungarian position substantially stabilized.
