German occupation of Luxembourg during World War I

Battle context

On 2 August 1914, German forces under Richard Tessmar occupied the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a neutral state, as part of Germany's strategic deployment toward France. The German government framed the occupation as a military necessity to support operations against France, though the move violated Luxembourg's neutrality. The occupation lasted the full duration of the war, from August 1914 through the armistice of 11 November 1918, placing Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde and Prime Minister Paul Eyschen in the position of governing under foreign military control. The occupation became a point of lasting political contention, with many Luxembourgers rejecting the German justification and viewing the episode as an unlawful subjugation of a small neutral state.
