The Fort Mims massacre was a pivotal early action of the Creek War, demonstrating the offensive capacity of the Red Sticks faction and triggering a broader military response. A force of approximately 1,000 Red Stick warriors under Peter McQueen and William Weatherford stormed the fortified homestead, defeating the militia garrison and inflicting between 252 and 265 casualties on the Alabama side at a cost of around 200 Red Stick dead. The scale of the assault on a fortified position close to Mobile sharpened the conflict from a factional dispute within the Creek Nation into a crisis demanding intervention by United States forces, accelerating the campaign that would eventually culminate in the decisive engagements of the Creek War.
