The First Battle of Tijuana marked the first significant victory for the Magonistas during the opening phase of the Mexican Revolution. The capture of Tijuana on May 9, 1911 gave rebel forces a foothold on the northern border, and the town was subsequently used as a base for recruiting American volunteers from California, expanding the Liberal Party's manpower from across the border.
