Battle context

The First Battle of Svensksund was a naval engagement fought in the Gulf of Finland during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. The Swedish force of approximately 5,000 faced a Russian fleet roughly two and a half times larger at 12,000. Swedish casualties reached 1,500, indicating a costly engagement. The battle is one of two major actions fought in these waters during the war, the second occurring the following year at the same location, where the outcome would differ sharply. As part of the broader Russo-Swedish contest for control of the Baltic littoral and Gulf of Finland approaches, the engagement at Svensksund contributed to the attrition that shaped the conditions leading to that second, decisive confrontation.
