First Battle of İnönü

Overview

The First Battle of İnönü took place between 6 and 11 January 1921 near İnönü in Hüdavendigâr Vilayet during the Greco-Turkish War (1919–22), also known as the western front of the larger Turkish War of Independence. This was the first battle for the Army of the Grand National Assembly that was newly built standing army in place of irregular troops.

Significance

The First Battle of İnönü marked a critical transition in the Greco-Turkish War for the Ankara Government: it was the first engagement fought by the Army of the Grand National Assembly as a newly constituted standing army, replacing the irregular forces that had previously carried the nationalist cause. Facing a Greek force of roughly 18,000 with only around 6,000 troops under İsmet Pasha, the battle tested whether the reorganized nationalist military could hold against a numerically superior adversary. Greek casualties of 130–211 recorded against this disparity indicated that the new regular army could contest the western front, providing an early validation of the decision to build a conventional force. The engagement set the operational tone for the western front of the Turkish War of Independence and demonstrated that the Grand National Assembly's military project was viable.
