Battle context
The First Battle of Fallujah, conducted under Operation Vigilant Resolve, was launched in direct response to the killing of four U.S. contractors in March 2004. The operation aimed both to suppress militants entrenched in the city and to apprehend or kill those responsible for the contractor killings. U.S. forces under commanders including Conway, Mattis, and Toolan committed approximately 10,000 troops against an estimated 6,000 fighters affiliated with Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, the organization led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The battle marked an early direct confrontation between U.S. forces and organized insurgent networks in Iraq's Sunni heartland, and the presence of senior Zarqawi-linked commanders on the opposing side underscored Fallujah's role as a hub of organized resistance during the occupation period.
