First Battle of Bedriacum

Battle context

The First Battle of Bedriacum was a decisive engagement in the Year of the Four Emperors, the period of civil war that followed the deaths of Nero and Galba. Fought near Bedriacum in what is now Lombardy, roughly 35 kilometers from Cremona, the battle pitted the forces of Otho against those of Vitellius, two rival claimants contesting control of the Roman Empire. Otho fielded approximately 50,000 troops against a Vitellian force of around 70,000, and Othonian casualties reached some 40,000 — a loss of such magnitude that it effectively ended Otho's bid for the principate. The scale of the defeat concentrated political authority in Vitellius's hands and removed one of the principal competitors from the contest, though the broader civil war continued as further claimants emerged. The engagement illustrated the central dynamic of the Year of the Four Emperors: the question of imperial succession being settled not by the Senate or legal succession but by the relative strength of provincial armies and their commanders.
