Battle context
The capture of Saigon on 30 April 1975 by North Vietnamese forces ended the Vietnam War and extinguished the government of South Vietnam. North Vietnamese forces numbered approximately 270,000 against roughly 60,000 South Vietnamese defenders in the city. The fall triggered the evacuation of thousands of civilians and U.S. personnel. Following the city's capture, a transition period under the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam preceded formal reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, completing the objective North Vietnam had pursued throughout the war.
