Battle context
The capture of Kampala on April 11, 1979 marked the decisive end of Idi Amin's presidency, bringing down his government and scattering Ugandan forces. The combined Tanzanian and Uganda National Liberation Front operation removed Amin from power and installed a UNLF administration in his place. The fall of the capital concluded the Uganda–Tanzania War's principal military objective: the overthrow of Amin's regime. Of the approximately 1,000 Ugandan troops engaged, roughly 500 became casualties, reflecting the severity of the fighting for the capital. The battle's outcome transferred political authority in Uganda to the UNLF, marking a direct transition from military conquest to a new governing structure.
