Battle context

The Expédition d'Irlande was an attempt by the French Republic to open a second front against Britain by landing between 12,000 and 25,000 troops in Ireland to join forces with the United Irishmen and overthrow British rule. France anticipated that success would deal a major blow to British morale, prestige, and military effectiveness, and would position Ireland as a staging ground for a subsequent invasion of Britain itself. The expedition's failure — costing France some 2,230 casualties — foreclosed that strategic opening and left the United Irishmen without the external support their planned rebellion depended upon. Within the broader War of the First Coalition, the episode underscored Britain's continued strategic vulnerability on its western flank while also demonstrating the limits of French power-projection in the face of operational difficulty.
