Significance
The English Armada of 1589, also known as the Counter Armada or Drake–Norris Expedition, was England's attempt to press the strategic advantage following Spain's failed Armada of the previous year. Dispatched by Queen Elizabeth I under the joint command of Francis Drake and John Norris, the expedition sailed against the Iberian Union with a force of over 27,000 men, supported by the Prior of Crato as a claimant to the Portuguese throne. The operation was framed partly as an offensive strike against Spanish naval power and partly as an intervention to install a rival claimant and detach Portugal from the Iberian Union. The campaign resulted in catastrophic English losses, with casualties estimated between 11,000 and 18,000 — a figure representing roughly half to two-thirds of the embarked force. This scale of attrition reversed whatever momentum England had gained from the defeat of the Spanish Armada and demonstrated the limits of English power-projection against the Iberian Union's defended coastline. The expedition's failure left Philip II's strategic position largely intact and foreclosed any near-term English hope of exploiting Portuguese separatism as a tool against Spain in the broader Anglo-Spanish War.
