Dull Knife Fight

Overview

The Dull Knife Fight, or the Battle on the Red Fork, part of the Great Sioux War of 1876, was fought on November 25, 1876, in present-day Johnson County, Wyoming between soldiers and scouts of the United States Army and warriors of the Northern Cheyenne. The battle essentially ended the Northern Cheyennes' ability to continue the fight for their freedom on the Great Plains.

Significance

The Dull Knife Fight, fought on November 25, 1876, in present-day Johnson County, Wyoming, was a decisive engagement in the Great Sioux War of 1876 between United States Army soldiers and scouts under Ranald S. Mackenzie and Northern Cheyenne warriors led by Dull Knife and Little Wolf. The battle essentially ended the Northern Cheyennes' ability to continue the fight for their freedom on the Great Plains, effectively removing them as an organized fighting force in the wider conflict. Coming late in the war, the engagement contributed to the broader U.S. Army campaign to compel the remaining free bands onto reservations following the events of the preceding summer.
