The Crimean Offensive saw the Soviet 4th Ukrainian Front, under Fyodor Tolbukhin and Filipp Oktyabrskiy, drive the German 17th Army of Army Group South Ukraine — comprising Wehrmacht and Romanian formations under Erwin Jaenecke and Horia Macellariu — from the Crimean peninsula entirely. The operation resulted in the evacuation of Axis forces from Crimea, though German and Romanian units suffered considerable losses during that withdrawal. With Soviet forces numbering roughly 462,400 against an Axis garrison estimated between 230,000 and 255,970, the offensive demonstrated a clear material and operational advantage that the Red Army had accumulated by spring 1944 on the Eastern Front. The loss of Crimea stripped Army Group South Ukraine of a strategically significant position in the Black Sea region and accelerated the broader collapse of German defensive lines in the south.
