Crimea attacks

Significance

Beginning in July 2022, a series of explosions and fires struck Russian-occupied Crimea, the peninsula that had served as a primary staging ground for Russia's offensive into southern Ukraine. Crimea had been under Russian occupation since 2014 and functioned as the logistical and operational base supporting subsequent Russian occupation of Kherson Oblast and Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Attacks on the peninsula therefore threatened the rear infrastructure underpinning Russian positions across the southern front, signaling that Ukraine was extending pressure beyond the immediate front lines to contest Russia's ability to sustain its southern campaign.
