The Courland Pocket was a German encirclement on the Courland Peninsula in Latvia, lasting from October 1944 to May 1945 on the Eastern Front. German Army Group forces were cut off from the main front following Soviet advances that severed land connections to the rest of German-held territory. The pocket persisted until May 10, 1945, after Germany's general capitulation, making it one of the last formations to formally surrender. Its prolonged existence tied down substantial forces on both sides through the final months of the war in Europe, though the strategic consequences of its isolation meant the trapped German forces played no further offensive role in the broader Eastern Front campaign.
