Significance

The Combate de São Borja took place at the outset of Paraguay's invasion of Rio Grande do Sul, marking one of the opening engagements of Paraguayan forces operating on Brazilian soil. The action was part of the broader Paraguayan offensive that carried the war into imperial territory, a strategic gambit that ultimately drew the Brazilian Empire, Argentina, and Uruguay into the Triple Alliance against Paraguay. With Paraguayan forces under Estigarribia and Duarte numbering around 10,000 against a Brazilian force of approximately 2,000 under Lima and Mena Barreto, the engagement reflected the numerical advantage Paraguay sought to exploit in the early stages of the southern invasion.
