Chaambi Operations

Battle context

The Chaambi Operations were a sustained Tunisian military offensive launched in December 2012 against Salafist jihadist fighters concentrated in the Jebel ech Chambi area near Kasserine. With a force of approximately 6,000 Tunisian troops engaged against an Ansar al-Sharia presence estimated at around 2,000 fighters, the operations constituted the most significant direct military confrontation between the Tunisian state and jihadist insurgents in the post-2011 period. Recorded casualties among Ansar al-Sharia reached approximately 1,500, indicating the intensity and duration of the campaign. The conflict extended across nearly seven years before concluding with a Tunisian Army victory in 2019, reflecting both the difficulty of dislodging entrenched insurgents from mountainous terrain and the state's sustained commitment to military pressure. Within the broader Insurgency in the Maghreb, the Chaambi Operations represented Tunisia's principal effort to contain a domestic jihadist threat that had exploited post-revolutionary instability along the Algerian border region.
