Battle context

The British seizure of Sint Eustatius in February 1781 gave British Army and naval forces under Lieutenant-General Sir John Vaughan and Admiral George Rodney control of a Dutch-owned Caribbean island during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. The operation proved short-lived: French forces allied with the Dutch retook the island later in 1781, ending British occupation within the year. The capture generated significant controversy in Britain, where Vaughan and Rodney faced allegations that they had exploited the seizure for personal enrichment and had neglected more pressing military priorities in doing so.
