Battle context
The Capture of Lucknow in March 1858 marked a decisive turning point in suppressing the Indian Mutiny of 1857. British forces under Sir Colin Campbell, numbering 31,000, retook the city from an Oudh force estimated at 100,000 and dismantled organized rebel resistance across the Kingdom of Awadh. The operation reversed the situation left from the previous winter, when British forces had evacuated Lucknow after relieving the besieged Residency garrison rather than holding the city. By retaking and holding Lucknow, the East India Company broke the administrative and military coherence of the Awadh rebellion, removing the principal stronghold from which Begum Hazrat Mahal and the Oudh leadership had directed operations. The fall of the city effectively ended coordinated resistance in the region, though it did not immediately extinguish all insurgent activity across the subcontinent.
