Battle context
The Capitulation of Dornbirn eliminated virtually the entire Austrian force under FML Franz Jellacic as an effective fighting unit. Surrounded near Lake Constance by the French VII Corps under Marshal Augereau, Jellacic surrendered his infantry and artillery — some 4,058 men — intact to the French, though his cavalry escaped to Bohemia. The capitulation removed one of the remaining Austrian formations still operating in the western theater during the War of the Third Coalition, contributing to the broader collapse of Austrian resistance that followed the campaign of 1805.
