Battle context
The Budapest offensive, conducted by Soviet and Romanian armies against Hungary and Nazi German Axis forces between October 1944 and February 1945, resulted in a decisive Soviet victory with the fall of Budapest on 13 February 1945. The operation was among the most difficult and complicated offensives the Soviet Army undertook in Central Europe, reflected in over 80,000 Soviet casualties against approximately 125,000 German losses. Its conclusion removed Hungary from the Axis order of battle and accelerated the end of World War II in Europe, pushing the front westward and tightening the strategic encirclement of the Third Reich as Allied forces converged from multiple directions.
