The blockade of Barcelona represented an early Spanish effort to recapture French-held territory in Catalonia during the opening phase of the Peninsular War. Despite deploying a force of roughly 19,500 troops under Joan Miquel de Vives against a French garrison of approximately 8,000 under Guillaume Duhesme, the operation failed to dislodge French control of the city. The failure left Barcelona firmly in French hands through December 1808, sustaining a strategically significant occupation that anchored French military presence in northeastern Spain throughout the broader conflict.
