Belgorod–Kharkov offensive operation

Overview

The Belgorod–Kharkov strategic offensive operation, or simply Belgorod–Kharkov offensive operation, was a Soviet strategic summer offensive that aimed to liberate Belgorod and Kharkov, and destroy Nazi German forces of the 4th Panzer Army and Army Detachment Kempf. The operation was codenamed Operation General Rumyantsev, after the 18th-century Field Marshal Peter Rumyantsev and was conducted by the Voronezh and Steppe Fronts in the southern sector of the Kursk Bulge. The battle was referred to as the Fourth Battle of Kharkov by the Germans.

Significance

The Belgorod–Kharkov offensive operation, codenamed Operation General Rumyantsev, was a Soviet strategic summer offensive conducted by the Voronezh and Steppe Fronts in the southern sector of the Kursk Bulge. Its objectives were the liberation of Belgorod and Kharkov and the destruction of the German 4th Panzer Army and Army Detachment Kempf. The Soviet force of over one million troops outnumbered the defending German strength of approximately 200,000. German casualties reached roughly 25,000–26,000 against Soviet losses of between 177,000 and 255,000, reflecting the intensity of resistance. The operation formed the offensive counterpart to the defensive victory at Kursk, extending Soviet momentum in the southern sector and pressing Erich von Manstein's forces back from positions they had held or contested repeatedly. The Germans designated it the Fourth Battle of Kharkov, underscoring how central the city had become to the struggle for the Eastern Front's southern axis. Its outcome contributed to a sustained shift of operational initiative toward Soviet forces in the summer of 1943.
