Battle context

Negba, a kibbutz founded in 1939, occupied a position overlooking the Majdal–Bayt Jibrin road, making it a recurring Egyptian objective during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The Egyptian army launched two major assaults against it in June and July 1948, reflecting the road's operational value as a line of advance through the southern theater. With an Israeli force of only around 140 defenders and reported casualties ranging from 100 to 300, the engagements illustrated the intensity of pressure Israeli positions in the Negev approaches faced during this phase of the war. Holding or losing Negba directly affected Egyptian ability to project force along that corridor, placing the kibbutz at the center of the broader contest for the southern front.
