The Battles of Khalkhin Gol were the decisive engagements of the undeclared Soviet–Japanese border conflicts of 1939, settling the contest between Soviet and Japanese forces over the disputed territory near the Khalkhin Gol river. The Soviet force under Georgy Zhukov outnumbered Japanese forces and inflicted casualties on both sides at considerable cost, but the outcome terminated the immediate border conflict and demonstrated Soviet capacity to project combined-arms power on the Asian frontier. The engagement influenced Japanese strategic calculations in the broader regional competition between the two powers.
