Battles of El Bruch

Overview

The two battles of the Bruch were engagements fought successively, at El Bruc, near Barcelona, Catalonia, on 6 and 14 June 1808, during the Peninsular War, by French troops commanded by Brigadier General François de Schwarz and General of Division Joseph Chabran against Spanish volunteers and mercenaries led by General Antoni Franch i Estalella and Joan Baget.

Significance

The Battles of El Bruch were early engagements of the Peninsular War fought near Barcelona in Catalonia, pitting French regular forces under Schwarz and Chabran against Spanish volunteers and mercenaries. With French casualties recorded at approximately 1,220 against a Spanish force roughly half the size of the French contingent, the engagements demonstrated that irregular and volunteer forces could inflict significant losses on Napoleonic regulars. Occurring in June 1808, among the earliest weeks of organized Spanish resistance, the battles contributed to the pattern of local opposition across Catalonia that complicated French efforts to consolidate control over the Iberian Peninsula.
