The Battle of Zusmarshausen, fought on 17 May 1648 in what is now the Augsburg district of Bavaria, was one of the final major engagements of the Thirty Years' War, coming just months before the Peace of Westphalia ended the conflict. The Franco-Swedish allied army under Wrangel and Turenne defeated the Bavarian-Imperial force under von Holzappel, demonstrating the continued offensive capacity of the Swedish-French coalition in the war's closing stage. The victory extended allied military pressure into Bavaria itself, deepening the strategic vulnerability of the Electorate of Bavaria at the very moment when peace negotiations were reaching their conclusion. The engagement was costly for the Imperial side, and the Bavarian-Imperial army was saved from complete destruction only by the rearguard action conducted by Raimondo Montecuccoli and his cavalry, which allowed the bulk of the force to withdraw. Zusmarshausen thus reinforced the bargaining position of the Franco-Swedish alliance in the final diplomatic settlement that would end thirty years of war across the Holy Roman Empire.
