The Battle of Zumar was part of the Islamic State's broader August 2014 offensive across Nineveh province in northern Iraq, during which IS seized significant territory from Kurdish Peshmerga forces. The fall of Zumar demonstrated the early vulnerability of Peshmerga lines to IS pressure in the opening months of the Iraqi Civil War. A Kurdish counterattack in September failed to retake the city, but following US airstrikes, Peshmerga forces succeeded in recapturing Zumar in late October. The battle illustrates the pattern that defined the early phase of the conflict: IS territorial gains reversed only after coalition air support was brought to bear, establishing a dependency on US airstrikes that would shape Kurdish operational capacity throughout the war.
