The Battle of Zepita, fought between Santa Cruz's patriot force of 1,600 and Valdés's royalist army of 1,800 during the Peruvian War of Independence, resulted in a material gain for the patriot cause. Santa Cruz's army captured 240 rifles, 240 lances, 52 saddles, and 63 sabers from the royalist forces, a direct reduction of Viceregal military capacity and a corresponding boost to patriot supply. The engagement took place at a critical juncture in the independence struggle, with royalist forces still contesting control of Peru two years after independence was declared.
