Battle of Zela

Significance

The Battle of Zela, fought near the town of Zela in what is now northern Turkey, was a direct engagement between Julius Caesar and Pharnaces II of Pontus during Caesar's Civil War. The battle ended Pharnaces II's bid to expand Pontic rule over Asia Minor, terminating the military ambitions of a king who had sought to exploit Roman internal conflict to reconstitute his kingdom's power in the region. The engagement formed part of the broader sequence of operations Caesar conducted during the civil war period, requiring him to redirect forces to the eastern theater to address the Pontic threat before it could consolidate further territorial gains.
