Battle of Zealand Point

Overview

The Battle of Zealand Point was fought off Zealand on 22 March 1808 during the Gunboat War. Three ships of the line and one frigate of the Royal Navy intercepted and destroyed a Danish ship of the line. The British victory in the battle resulted in the loss of the Danish navy's last ship of the line.

Significance

The Battle of Zealand Point, fought off Zealand on 22 March 1808 during the Gunboat War, resulted in the destruction of a Danish ship of the line by a Royal Navy force of three ships of the line and one frigate. The engagement carried lasting operational consequence: the Danish vessel lost was the last ship of the line remaining to the Danish navy. Its destruction effectively ended Denmark–Norway's capacity to contest British naval power at the level of capital ships, reducing subsequent Danish resistance to the guerre de course and gunboat operations from which the Gunboat War took its name. Commanders George Parker on the British side and Carl Wilhelm Jessen on the Danish side oversaw an engagement whose outcome foreclosed one avenue of conventional naval resistance for Denmark–Norway for the remainder of the conflict.
