Significance

The Battle of Zarumilla was the opening offensive of the 1941 Ecuadorian–Peruvian War, lasting from July 23 to 31. Peruvian forces numbering between 7,000 and 10,000 engaged Ecuadorian defenders, who suffered 1,334 casualties in the course of the fighting. The operation established Peru's military initiative in the conflict and set the terms under which the broader war would unfold. Commanded by Eloy Ureta, Manuel Odría, and José Marín on the Peruvian side, the offensive demonstrated a significant disparity in combat power between the two belligerents and positioned Peru to dictate the subsequent diplomatic and territorial settlement of the dispute.
